Bozeman Family Dentistry FAQs

When should I bring my children to their first dental checkup?

The ADA recommends that parents bring their children in for their first dental visit within 6

months of their first erupted tooth.

How often do I need to get my teeth cleaned at the dentist?

It is recommended to have two dental checkups/cleanings per year. This ensures that any

problems are caught early on before too much damage occurs. Not only that, but getting teeth

checked and cleaned two times a year is also a great way to prevent decay in the first place.

Why do most dentists recommend electric toothbrushes?

The pulsating action produced by electric toothbrushes is a great way to remove plaque from

your teeth. But one of the main reasons electric toothbrushes are recommended is because of

the built in timer. With life seeming to move faster these days, dentists are finding that people

are brushing for shorter and shorter periods of time. If you had a manual toothbrush, and

brushed for the proper length of time, you wouldn’t necessarily see a drastic improvement

between manual and electric.

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath is usually caused by a large amount of sulfur-producing bacteria being present in the

mouth. This can be due to poor brushing and/or flossing habits. Sometimes tonsils can be the

cause of bad breath, as the nooks and crannies on them are a breeding ground for bacteria.

Good brushing and flossing habits coupled with a mouthwash a few times a day can most often

tackle bad breath. Another cause of bad breath is a lack of saliva in the mouth. Saliva is not only

used in the breaking down of food during meals, but for the transportation of smaller, remaining

food particles after meals.

How many times a day should I floss?

You should floss at least once a day. If you are prone to cavities, especially cavities between

your teeth you should floss more than once. Also if you are experiencing persistent bad breath,

you should floss more than one per day. Ideally, flossing after each meal would be the best

policy.

How long should I brush my teeth for?

Brushing for 2 to 3 minutes each time you brush is appropriate.

What type of toothpaste should I use?

With so many different brands of toothpaste on the market, it can be hard to choose. While

there is no concrete “best toothpaste” there are some pastes that are better at certain things

than others.

● Arm & Hammer seems to do well on stained teeth

● Sensodyne really does help for those with sensitive teeth

● Biotene works well for people with dry mouth

● Ecodent is a powdered toothpaste that is sometimes hard to find, but works

wonders on plaque and overall oral health. One might even say it is the “best

toothpaste (powder)” Locally it is sold in the Huckleberry’s section of Rosauers,

and may also be available at the CoOp.
